Villa de Leyva: Where to Camp?

As a regular blog reader you might have seen picutres of Villa de Leyva already in earlier posts or on the referenced photo gallery. And therefore you know this little town in Colombia is worth a visit for sure. Don't miss it.

But you might have been thinking of where to stay when you get to Villa de Leyva. There is a place I can highly recommend: Colombian Highlands Hostal Renacer. Whether you are backpacking, tent-camping, looking for a private room or vehicle camping like I did. Hostal Renacer offers it all. There are dorms, private rooms and a campground for tents as well as some space to camp with your vehicle.

Hostal Renacer is easy to find. Just drive through the town and it is sign posted, at a right turn on a gravel road that goes slightly up the hill for about one kilometer, pass the military post on your left and take the next right turn up the hill. The road is in good condition and can be done with any kind of vehicle, no 4x4 required.

GPS Coordinates: N05°38.489'  W073°30.776

Once you get out of the town it is well sign posted. Hostal Renacer is a quiet place, that offers all you are looking for to stay for a couple of days and relax. It is about a 10 to 15 min walk from the town center and it also rents bikes and maps and information sheets with what ever you can do in Villa de Leyva and the surrounding mountains. Colombian Highlands offers tours as well, which I have been told are very worth while. I have been out and about on my own.

This is the nice and grassy area where I camped. There are more places for larger RV's on a lower level. The hostal has a common room with TV, tables, WiFi. A restaurant offers breakfast and fantastic dinner. But there is also a kitchen that you can use if you are up to cook your own meals and a fridge for the guests to put there stuff in. Another fridge is full of beer and soft drinks that you can take from and mark on a list and pay for it at the end when checking out. The staff is super friendly and I stayed about a week longer than I initially thought I would.

You might meet this two cuties when walking...

...down to the beautiful town of Villa de Leyva.

Oscar, the owner of Colombian Highlands has a cool Land Cruiser that he had modified, extended the chasis and added two more passenger doors, it also has a pop-up roof. The truck is still a work in progress project but looks really cool. He took it to a trip to La Guajira about the same time as I was there. Unfortunately we did not meet up there.
